Facilities Safety Department
The Utah State University Facilities Organization is committed to the safety and health of its employees. Facilities Safety serves as a resource for all Facilities Departments to create, support, and maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
This page is divided into several sections. To jump directly to a specific section, click on one of the following links:
The Safety Committee
The Safety Committee is headed by the Safety Manager and includes, in addition, one member of each Facilities shop. The Safety Committee's numerous responsibilities focus on communicating safety regulations and standards to the employees of the USU Facilities Organization. Several of these are listed below:
- Safety Committee members schedule required safety training. Committee members work with supervisors to communicate with crews regarding schedules, help advertise training sessions, ensure that employees attend required training, and evaluate training sessions.
- Once a month, members conduct inspections of shop areas, mechanical areas, and project sites. These are generally chosen at random, unless the Committee has reason to believe a site is unsafe.
- Every shop has a monthly safety meeting, where lessons are delivered on topics that have been chosen one year in advance. Each shop's Committee member decides which worker will chair the meeting. In these workshops, employees discuss the safety regulations involved with the specific tasks they perform.
- Facilities employees are welcome to make safety suggestions whenever they wish. These are evaluated by the Safety Committee and, if appropriate, are incorporated into the safety policies of the department.
- Safety Committee members are currently in the process of developing Job Hazard Analyses instruction sets detailing safety regulations for all job tasks, tools, and machines. These will be readily available to all employees. In addition, the Safety Committee is working with the Resource Committee to incorporate safety procedures in shop operations manuals.
Accident Procedures/The Return-to-Work Program
One of the major goals of the Safety Committee is to return injured employees to their original jobs as soon as possible. This is the purpose of the Return-to-Work program, which was recently implemented and has been extremely successful.

The Safety Incentive Program
The Safety Incentive Program was recently implemented by the Safety Committee and seeks to reward employees for safe workplace behavior. By following regulations, workers may earn points for themselves for their crews. If a worker or crew earns a certain number of points in a 3-month period, they will receive gift cards worth $20.00.
