The America in Bloom Competition

In 2004, Utah State University was awarded the coveted America in Bloom award, which is bestowed upon communities and universities that demonstrate excellence in their beautification efforts. This award is based on eight criteria: Floral Displays, Landscaped Areas, Urban Forestry, Environmental Efforts, Tidiness Efforts, Community Involvement, Turf & Groundcover Areas, and Heritage Conservation. Our university scored very high in all departments and received numerous commendations from the judges, including this Special Mention in the category of Environmental Efforts:

"Utah State University is to be commended for its stewardship
of the environment. Having an active IPM program for the entire

campus demonstrates a responsible approach toward minimizing
impact on the natural environment. The new power plant and
infrastructure has impacted not only the University community
but also the greater Logan region. Air quality has improved,
dropping off pollution levels dramatically. Utah State has
instituted an effective recycle-reuse-recycle program that has
implications throughout the University community. The theme
of conservation is also demonstrated through the use of
compressed gas for the internal bus transportation system. As
Utah is in its sixth year of a drought, the University is using
cutting edge technology for the monitoring and application
of water to the University greenscapes."
